Centered Riding® Inc. Board of Trustees Meeting Tuesday, January 14, 2020
Review of Minutes:
• November 12, 2019 Board of Trustees (BOT) meeting minutes – typo noted in Presi- dent’s Report (“willing” should be “filling”). Upon correction, BOT approved the minutes. • BOT approved November 19, 2019 Special BOT meeting minutes.
Officers’/Executive Director’s Report:
President Peggy Brown:
• Welcomed Dorothy Crosby to BOT.
• Proposed the following actions to ensure BOT and Centered Riding (CR) Inc. future success:
• Marie Westlake, Executive Director, will “take a stronger role of overseeing and guiding
the President in accomplishing required duties in a timely manner and in advising the President of historical precedent regarding specific events ... as well as overseeing and advising the President, if necessary, in conducting meetings, following Robert’s Rules of Order.”
• Plans to meet with Nominations Committee to discuss how to encourage members to take on leadership roles on BOT and as Committee Chairs. Level III and IV clinicians will be asked to contribute time/talent to CR Inc.
• Committee overhaul is a 2020 goal; requested opinions/suggestions.
• Trademark/wordmark/word device registration process has taken place during recent
months; Second Vice President will report on this.
• Led discussion of CR’s Sally Swift Legacy Fund, suggesting group contributions from
Level IIIs and Level IVs to this fund. Ursula Turtiainen volunteered to manage fund
promotion.
• Sue Falkner-March advised BOT re: problem contributing to CR funds when paying dues
online; Marie will follow up.
Second Vice President Carol Parker:
• Expressed gratitude to Gabriel Vocke and Lysan Massman for invaluable assistance re: recent situation, in which a person who is not a member of CR Inc. registered “Sally Swift Riding Method” in Germany.
• Thanked Susan Harris for creating new CR logo, adding “Sally Swift, Founder.” Members informed; trademarked logo now used on CR correspondence and throughout website.
• Trademark email/motion conducted in December; details attached to these minutes. BOT discussed trademark management. Carol contacted Attorney Donald C. Lucas of Lucas and Mercanti, New York City; signed engagement letter to handle the following:
o New CR trademark in USA, “based on use” filing (approximate cost $500), then international application based on use for Canada, Switzerland, Japan. (International application cost approximately $2,000.)
o Register the word marks “centered riding” and “centered riding, Sally Swift, Founder” in USA. Cost approximately $400 for each word mark.
• Suggested formal letter of thanks to Donald Lucas and Mr. Jes Carstensen for pro bono research/advice on the aforementioned registration of “Sally Swift Riding Method” in Germany; Peggy Brown, Susan Harris will take this on. Carol reported on change to new logo in Switzerland.
