Carbon Footprint of Food Production
Here in Wales there’s a huge variety
of foods stocked on supermarket
shelves - food from all over the world,
at any time of year.
Getting these foods to us takes a
great deal of energy, whether that’s
by their transportation methods or
the way they are produced. Here are
some examples of the greenhouse
gas emissions of common foods we
consume in Wales:
Bananas
An exotic fruit grown only in distant countries;
you may think that this super snack would have
a high carbon footprint on its journey to our
shopping baskets. However, thanks to the little
energy input needed to grow them, having their
own natural packaging, and suitability to be shipped
by boat in vast quantities, the banana
has a relatively low impact of 110g
CO2e.
Not bad for the calories
and all the nutrients that
they provide us!
