Strawberries
The jewel of the British summer, this
juicy gem is at its best when freshly
picked on a sunny July day! When in
season and grown locally, it’s carbon
footprint is a modest 490g CO2e per
250g punnet. However, we are able
to buy strawberries all year round due
to heated greenhouses, or by importing
from warmer countries.
Flying is often the preferred option for transporting soft
fruits that perish quickly, therefore the greenhouse gas
emissions of a similar size punnet, bought in December,
could be seven times as much, at 3.65kg CO2e!
Cheeseburger
There are several elements that make up a beef burger with cheese- we
have the bun, the cheese, maybe some ketchup and of course the beef. All
together this adds up to a 4oz cheeseburger contributing to 3.2kg CO2e of
greenhouse gases.
Being animal products, the beef and
the cheese make up the biggest
proportion of this number.
However, ensuring that the
ingredients are produced
through regenerative farming
methods should help to
reduce the environmental
impact of this treat.
Figures are taken from the book “How Bad are Bananas” by Mike Berners-Lee. CO2e
denotes the greenhouse gases produced equivalent to carbon dioxide.
