A letter from our guest editor
There is nothing I love more than spending time
walking or cycling in our great outdoors. I’ve been
lucky enough to travel across Wales and it never
ceases to amaze me just how wonderful our
country is, from our towns to our mountains, our
valleys to our coast, and it sometimes feels like we
have it all.
Unfortunately, wherever we go it can feel inevitable that we will encounter discarded
rubbish or fly-tipping which is a blight on our towns, cities and countryside. Not only
does it spoil our enjoyment of these places, affects
tourism and our wellbeing but it also poses a threat
to our fragile environment and our precious wildlife;
what’s more it’s completely unnecessary.
This newsletter is all about caring for our
environment, protecting our beautiful country
and taking action to tackle litter. The BBC’s Blue
Planet series shone a light on the impact of plastic
waste in our oceans and it’s wonderful to see the
action taken by schools to tackle plastic waste.
From banning plastic straws to plastic free lunches
to local litter picks, there are amazing projects
happening right across Wales.
The action taken by schools, along with work
by passionate volunteers, community groups,
local and national government, means that Keep
Wales Tidy’s street litter surveys have seen an
improvement in litter over the last 10 years. Let’s keep that going! I hope you will find
some inspiration and new ideas to share with young people in this issue.
