Anything that has been discarded where it shouldn’t be is litter. Whether this is plastic,
paper, cigarettes, burst balloons, metal, organic or any other material, if it’s left to rot in
any environment outside of a bin or a controlled landfill site, it’s litter.
As the amount of packaging used in our
lifestyle increases, so does the opportunity
for littering. Discarded coffee cups
and food packaging have become an
increasingly common sight as we see more
takeaway outlets spring up, leading to
habits of grabbing food and drink on the go
becoming more popular.
Of all the single use plastic items littered in Wales
the worst culprits are plastic straws and fast-
food packaging. Keep Wales Tidy found fast-food
packaging on 7.8% of streets in Wales and plastic
straws on 8.3%.
Smoking litter is the most commonly found litter
in Wales, with 25% of people surveyed by Keep
Wales Tidy admitting to having dropped a cigarette
end on the ground.
