The “Megger” or Megohmmeter
This device is used to check the insulation of electric motor windings and detect ground faults on high voltage sys-
tems. It uses a high potential crank generator to apply high voltage to the test circuit. Be very careful to keep clear of
the meter leads and test circuit when cranking the megger.
To use the Megohmmeter
1) Safety Check: Confirm the circuit is not live with a voltmeter (Fluke) or with the Megger by selecting the 500V
range setting on the unit and connect the leads to the test circuit. Read the 600V scale on the meter. DO NOT
CRANK The meter should read zero volts if no voltage is present.
2) Depending on the circuit to be tested, connect the meter to the motor or cables as shown.
