FEATURE STORY
IT’S EYE CARE MONTH
By Nicholas Karjalahti, Manager Rail Grinding
Do me a favor, ask yourself what does almost everyone talk about with others? Hey, have you seen this
movie, did you see the awesome thunder head clouds yesterday, did you see that awesome Harley go by,
what did you catch this weekend fishing, or have you read the latest Track N’ Times article by the amazing
writer Nick Karjalahti yet? Even age makes little difference. Kids for instance, what is your favorite color,
which video game is do you like to play, or how many baskets did you score in basketball? What do all
these things have in common? Sight; being able to see makes all these things possible and more enjoyable.
Now what if you lost your sight? How would your interpretation of the world change? 80% of the infor-
mation you take in during your lifetime comes from sight. So, what does Loram do? We provide one of the
highest levels of protection for your eyes, the full-face respirator. The eye is the second most complex part
of your body only surpassed in complexity by your brain. This is why Loram provides the most protection
for something that has over 2 million working parts.
I know you guys are wondering what is his point? Every single machine visit I have made this year, planned
or unplanned, I have found at least one non-compliance with regards to eye care. The issues vary from not
wearing foam lined safety glasses; others are no respirator under buggies. I ask, “why are you choosing to
not protect yourself?” The answers vary, but it seems they all stem from “It won’t happen to me,” “I was
just there for a second” or “I can just wash it out myself.” To which I say, “It only takes one blink and it is a
hard and fast rule.” You don’t have to like it, but you do have to follow it. Did you know that you blink 5.2
million times a year, and only 17% of your eye is exposed to the human world? How are you going to wash
the other 83%? If you choose not to follow the rules, there is a high probability of this happening to you.
Maybe a little drill or needle in the eye to remove the metal sounds like fun to you?
