ANSWER: 1) Review the authority and track chart. 2) Make sure that all crew members understand the authority and
have a copy. 3) Get a headcount. 4) Proceed into the next block.
2. You’re being rushed by the customer to hurry up, the pressure is getting to you. What should you do?
ANSWER: 1) Always remember that no task is to great or important to forget the rules, and to ensure the safety of
yourself, the crew, and the equipment. 2) Reassure the customer that all of the proper steps are being taken to get
the task at hand done efficiently and safely.
3. Phil Homan has decided to make a machine visit and it’s your lucky day to have him in the cab with you. What is
Phil’s responsibilities while in the cab observing the operations?
ANSWER: 1) Phil should make sure he has all of the proper PPE and Valid Railroad Credentials. 2) Know and under-
stand the current Track Authority and retain a copy on his person. 3) Do not cause any distractions that might com-
promise the operator. 4) To always be vigilant of the task at hand, whether the machine is just track traveling or per-
forming operations.
4. Your pilot gets on board and says I have time, whenever you’re ready let’s go. What is your response to the pi-
lot? What actions need to be taken?
ANSWER: 1) Tell the pilot that a Loram crew member must be present for the Track and Time verbally given from
the Dispatch. 2) We must hear the authority and its entirety from the dispatcher.
5. The Out of Limits program has documented the information and process that has been on going within
the Loram fleet for some time. This sets the standard for all to comply with, so we all have a clear understanding of
the expectation regardless of what machine or division you are working in. Why is it important that this concept is a
way of life in the field, and not just another program that meets some objective from the corporate office?
ANSWER: 1) Going out of limits could potentially endanger your life and the lives of your crew and your fellow crew-
members on the railroad.
Additional words we should always remember: Know Before You Go – Always receive verbal confirmation from the
dispatcher and make sure the entire crew understands the authority and has a copy.
