DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHT
I’m Too Hot!
Let me breath!
By Shea Oelfke, Manager Fleet Maintenance
Keep your engines cool
There are many simple things
we can do in the field to keep
our engines healthy. One of
the most important is keeping
the engine cool. The radiator
is at the heart of your engines
cooling system. It requires air
passing through the fins to
cool the coolant. For air to
pass through the fins must be
clean and clear of debris.
We do this with air wands,
make sure you are blowing
out your radiators often to
prevent immovable buildup
that we see in the picture to
the right. Always ensure you
are wearing a respirator and
other necessary PPE when
performing this task after a Radiator removed from an auxillary generator that was overheating.
5-step review with your su-
perintendent. When fins start
to fold over flat and block air
flow it is time to replace or
rebuild your radiator. Talk
with a tech or your manager
when this happens to proceed
with a rebuild or replacement.
Check your coolant levels
regularly, test your coolant
with test strips provided in
your oil sample kit. If you
don’t have them, you can pick
them up from Cummins or
any local automotive store. Dusty environments we work in daily. Primary
and Secondary below.
