Short Cuts to Short Circuits Continued
the circuit breaker supplies. Any device without power will be the
one attached to the “short”. Further referencing of the schematic
will be required to determine the routing of the faulty wiring be-
tween the device and the terminal strip. Often, there will be addi-
tional terminal blocks in the circuit which can help you isolate the
problem further.
Having found the shorted wire, it may be necessary to run new
wires to the affected device or circuit. Be sure to use appropriate
Lock-Out Tag-Out procedures when pulling wire, as other high
voltage circuits could be in the same conduits or wireways as the
wire(s) you are replacing. Also, remember to “pay it forward” and
re-number the replacement wires for the next person. At some
point you will be thankful this was done.
In summary, troubleshooting a short isn’t always easy, but with pa-
tience, the right documentation, and a little luck, overcoming these
issues can be quite rewarding.
