E-LEARNING MODULES AND LEARNING GUIDE FOR TEACHERS

Objective 5: Examine the advantages and disadvantages of using
renewable energy sources in the Caribbean.

                                                  Read to Learn!

The use of renewable energy such as solar, wind,

hydropower and biomass have many benefits as well as

drawbacks. All renewable energy sources are clean and

emit little or no air pollution and reduce our dependence

on fossil fuels use. The advantages and
disadvantages for each renewable energy source are

               presented below:

                                                           Solar

Advantages and Disadvantages of using the various RE sources:

                                Advantages Disadvantages

Renewable and clean source of energy High initial/capital cost

Reduces dependence on fossil fuels Weather dependent/intermittent

Reduces electricity costs Energy storage (batteries) are expensive

Emits no air pollution Requires a lot of space

Low maintenance costs Efficiency drops during cloudy days

Is suitable for rural or isolated areas
