P. 180
CARIBBEAN EXAMINATIONS COUNCIL
CONFIDENTIAL
SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS COMMITTEE (SEC)
DECEMBER 2017 MEETING
SEC (10 {c}) 2017
PROPOSED CHANGE TO TENURE RULE
FOR EXAMINING COMMITTEES
1. SEC is asked to recall that each Examining Committee (EC) comprises a Chief Examiner
and two or more Assistant Chief Examiners for each syllabus. The current tenure rule allows
for ten years in either position on the Committee.
2. Critical to Caribbean Examinations Council’s (CXC’s)® success is the performance of
Examining Committees and the intention is to ensure that the Council’s examinations are not
compromised. Recently, there have been some challenges sourcing committee members
these normally result from extenuating circumstances such as unavailability of suitable
candidates, conflict of interest, new inexperienced committee members, resignations, illness,
migration and devastation from a natural disaster.
3. A change of the tenure rule is being proposed to allow for an extension of two years
beyond tenure when extenuating circumstances occur.
4. SEC is asked to approve the proposed change to the tenure rule to:
“A maximum of ten years as Chief Examiner but not exceeding twelve years on the
Committee.”
