and the phone was collected at 9:10 a.m. after the invigilator gave verbal instructions
regarding student having cell phones at that time. The Supervisor also noted that the CXC
notices were posted on the door and on the top corner of the whiteboard in the
examination room.
74. FAC agreed to cancel the candidate’s result in the subject, which is the usual penalty
for having unauthorized equipment in the examination room.

75. The Council received a report that the candidate was found using a calculator during
the conduct of the examination and the Local Registrar was asked to obtain a statement from
the Supervisor and candidate by 17 February.
76. FAC noted that the candidate’s statement was not received by the deadline, and
agreed to cancel the candidate’s result in the subject, which is the usual penalty for having
unauthorized equipment in the examination room.
ITEM 6 (iii) – REPORTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE TECHNICAL ADVISORY
COMMITTEE AND THE SUBJECT AWARDS COMMITTEE
77. FAC received FAC (6) – 2017 the report from the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC)
which has responsibility for quality assurance of the grade awarding procedures used by the
Subject Awards Committees (SACs), including the application of specified standards that are
consistent across subjects and across years. Professor Griffith, Chairman of TAC,
acknowledged the contribution of the other members of TAC – Dr Gordon Harewood and
Dr James Halliday, as well as Dr Yolande Wright, Senior Assistant Registrar - Examinations
Development and Production Division, and two observers from Grenada and St Vincent and the
Grenadines.
78. FAC heard that in keeping with this responsibility, TAC met with each SAC and held
discussions in order to:
(i) promote consistency, accuracy and fairness in the scores awarded for all
examinations;
(ii) assure the maintenance of standards in all stages of the examination process,
including paper setting, examinations administration, and marking of
candidates’ responses; and
(iii) assure the consistency of grade standards across years, subjects and
examination sittings.
Highlights of TAC Findings and Recommendations
79. FAC noted CXC’s continued expansion of the use of available technology in various
stages of the examinations process. In particular, TAC noted that in the January 2017 sitting
of the examination, all Multiple-Choice papers were available as an online offer and seven
