Energy Star Label
ENERGY STAR is a federal program run by the USA Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The
programme helps consumers learn more about the many ways they can save money and help
reduce environmental degradation through improved energy efficiency.
This programme is voluntary where various appliances, equipment, and other products such as
electronic, lighting, building products can earn the ENERGY STAR label by meeting the energy
efficiency requirements outlined in ENERGY STAR product specifications.
The US Environmental Protection Agency or the US Department of Energy set the energy
25
efficiency criteria where products must meet a set of key guiding principles.
• Product categories must contribute significant energy savings nationwide.
• Certified products must deliver the features and performance demanded by
consumers, in addition to increased energy efficiency.
• If the certified product costs more than a conventional, less-efficient counterpart,
purchasers will recover their investment in increased energy efficiency through utility
bill savings within a reasonable period.
• Energy efficiency can be achieved through available, non-proprietary technologies
offered by more than one manufacturer.
• Product energy consumption and performance can be measured and verified with
testing.
• Labelling would effectively differentiate products and be visible for purchasers.
