               Types of Energy Audits

o A preliminary energy audit is usually done within a few days and assesses the

energy cost and wastages. This preliminary energy audit can recommend short,

medium, and long-term solutions based on its findings.

o A detailed or comprehensive energy audit, like a preliminary energy audit,
assesses the energy cost and wastages and identifies energy saving opportunities.

It provides short, medium, and long-term recommendations as well as

engineering recommendations and identifies project priorities. This type of audit
normally takes between one to ten weeks.

Some basic tools required for an energy audit.

                       • Tape Measure – used to take measurements of walls, ceilings, windows.
                       • Light meter – this device is used to measure illumination levels.

                       • Thermometers – used to measure the temperatures in the offices. It is also used to

measure the temperature of operating equipment.

                       • Infrared camera – used to find overheated electrical wires, connections, neutrals,

circuit breakers, transformers, motors, and other pieces of electrical equipment. They
are also excellent for detection of wet insulation, missing insulation, leaks, and cold

                          spots.

                       • Voltmeter – a device used to determine operating voltages on electrical equipment.

                       • Clamp-on Ammeter – used to measure current in a wire.
                       • Wattmeter/Power Factor Meter – a portable hand-held wattmeter and power factor

meter that is used to determine the power consumption and power factor of

individual motors and other inductive devices.

                       • Combustion Analyzer – portable devices used to estimate the combustion efficiency

of furnaces, boilers or other fossil fuel burning machines.
                       • Airflow measurement devices – used to measure air flows from heating, air

                          conditioning or ventilating ducts.
