                                   1.3: Sustainable Energy an Overview.

Objective 4: Define the concept of sustainable energy.

                                                  Read to Learn!

Sustainable energy can be defined broadly as the sustainable

provision of energy that meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future generations to

meet their needs. Moreover, it is the capacity of energy

sources/capital stock to be replenished within human

lifetime, with no long term or irreversible damage to the

environment and renewable energy sources, plus avoidance
               or minimisation of waste.

The importance of sustainable energy is related to three elements: the efficient supply of energy

that is a basic condition for economic development; the need to avoid ecological disasters and

reduce or eliminate environmental damage; and the need for equity in the energy sector, which
can be translated into universal access to energy (see SDGs). Sustainable energy emphasizes

energy efficiency and use of renewable sources.
