               Objective 6: Discuss the need for sustainable energy.

                                                  Read to Learn!

                                                All societies require energy services to meet basic human needs
                                                (for example, lighting, cooking, space comfort, mobility, and

                                                communication) and to serve productive processes. (see SDGs);

                                                however, its generation and use may have negative

                                                consequences for development, particularly for social and

                                                environmental issues. These issues include the following:

                                               •  Environmental Change

               Issues  of  concern  include  fuel  consumption  in  power  generation;  carbon  dioxide  emission;

               copper waste generation; aluminium waste generation; water consumption; and greenhouse gas

               emission; and the need for replacement/substitutes for non-renewables.

                   •  Climate change

               Since approximately 1850, global use of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and gas) has increased to dominate

                                                                             2
               energy supply, leading to a rapid growth in carbon dioxide (CO ) emissions. Energy accounts for
               two-thirds of total greenhouse gas, so efforts to reduce emissions and mitigate climate

               change must include the energy sector. Globally, the primary sources of greenhouse gas
               emissions are electricity and heat (31%), agriculture (11%), transportation (15%), forestry (6%)

               and manufacturing (12%). Energy production of all types, accounts for 72 percent of

               all emissions.

               Our climate challenge is a shared global challenge – and it is largely an energy challenge. Energy
               accounts for over two-thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions. This means energy must be at
