                                                  Types of hydropower

The main types of hydropower systems are:

                   1. Run-of-the-River (diversion)
                          a. These systems do not require dams.

                          b. Typically installed for small hydropower systems.

                          c. Flowing water is channelled from the river through a canal or penstock to spin a

                              turbine to produce electricity.

                   2. Impoundment (Reservoir/dams)

                          a. These systems use a dam to store water in a reservoir.

                          b. Typically installed for large hydropower systems.
                          c. Water is released from the reservoir through the penstock to spin a turbine

which activates a generator to produce electricity.
