your situation21 as soon as possible, not just with simple letters, as
(you have done) thus far, but with a true demonstration of action
and the lord through his grace will help you to do what is
appropriate for your salvation/’ and be strong.’6
Letter 18: To the People of Qatar
1 he love of Christ our Lord, my dear brothers, which is for us the
soul of everlasting life in the holy Church and all its earthly
wisdom27 and the bond joining all distant peoples in a spiritual
community'28 and the eternal light on the souls of all true believers,
urges us, with a communal grief plainly stirred by the fear of God,
to turn to you with the love of a spiritual father and to attend to
you according to the spiritual law39 in these things which the
spiritual law teaches us to do. Since, even more than mlc and
custom require, we desire to show the greatest love towards you,
we desire to greet you from fax away through a letter of salutation,
I mean through your bishops,30 as ecclesiastical law requires. We
have made known to them that we are prepared to grant them and
you not only our greatest love but also the highest ecclesiastical
honour,31 in this time when you sorely need the excelling power of
God’s aid for fortifying your faith with a strong wall, with the time
requiring this, so that no damage might perhaps occur to the glory
of your faith in our Lord which occurred to the distant peoples
(who live) beyond you.32
However, since in (my) God-fearing mind T had clearly
suffered as a man on whom the care33 of spiritual fatherhood has
been laid with the name which means “almighty in the Church of
