The fever was of the most violent and singular
character, the paroxysms frequently coming
on twice in the twenty-four hours, and some
times never leaving the patient for double
that period. It attacked my head, and pro
duced delirium forty-eight hours after its first
appearance. Without attendants, my situa
tion was lonely and cheerless; and until the
morning of the 18th I was insensible to all
which was passing. I believe some Arabs,
sent by the Sheikh, took charge of me for a
part of the time. The fever on the previous
evening had reached its height, and a favour
able change now took place; the cool blood
again traversed my veins, I regained posses
sion of my faculties, and gradually became
better, though dreadfully reduced and de
bilitated.
On the 20th I was joined by Lieut. White
lock, who had not been more fortunate than
ourselves. He too was suffering from a fever
caught at Maskat, which had left him so
weak, that he could neither walk nor stand
without assistance. He had procured the
