(c) Quarantine
l
During the yearjthero was no epidemic and the Quarantine
Station at Karumal remained closed. This ctation had repairs
carried out to the buildings in 1946, Hew cemented roofing was also
used to replace the old Date thatch. Late in January 1947 the roof
of the larger building fell in. The Secretary to Kis Highness the
Sultan accompanied by the Quarantine Jlcdical Officer visited the
station and found the wooden beams used for supporting the roofing
far too fragile to be of .any use.
It was proposed to obtain sanction from the Sultan to rebuild
the whole place. The situaticn in India caused uneasiness and in order
that the station may be of use immediately, the buildings were re
thatched with Date, A .-all has also been built around the buildings
dividing the area from the ’/ullage near by.
The station requires a lcrt more attention, ar.d the Secretary
to the Sultan is a rare of the situation.
During the year reports were received from Dubai ar.d ether
Persian Svlf Ports cf a cholera outbreak. Several anti cholera measures
were planned for the protection cf hue cut ar.d Kuttrah but fortunately
did not have to be applied.
It was found that while i-.orcnal was useful to quarantine ships
and ship passengers, it was r.ct practicable to use it for Road traffic
and passengers. Karenal on the Dost coast line of ihiscat can only be
reached by sea. A narrow track is all that connects Kareraal with iiuscat
by land. The road enters Liuscat - I*uttrah almost due T7est. Had any cases
of cholera been imported by road and the intention been to isolate them
'
at Hareual, it would have meant taking them through the main street of
1
JJuttrah, through the bazaar down to the sea front for embarking for
Karenal. Plies abound in Muttrah and such a procedure would have completely
defeated anti cholera measures.
