Financial arrangements of the ruling family, 1940-1941 61

                                    2 -

                                                                                           I
that he had given the donations to the Fighter Fund
                                                                                           .
in order to ask for more money, He said that he and
his family were ready at all times to give all the
help within their power to the British Government and
that his request for increased allowances was only
made in view of the rise in the coat of living since
the war which had hit those members of the family who
              get the smaller allowances.
                 5. I replied that the Political Resident had the

welfare of the State at heart and that he certainly
would not wish to accept any subscriptions from the
Shaikhs if this meant that they would ask for increased
               allowanc es afterwards.
                 6. V/e have, however, the Shaikh's assurance that
he will not for the duration of the war, at any rate,

make any inroads on the -4rd revenue.

                                                    Yours sincerely j
