NATIONALITY REGULATIONS ISSUED BY THE RULER OF QATAR
IN 1951
1. Nationals
The following are considered to be Qatar nationals: —
(a) All persons born in Qatar except as provided in Regulation 2.
(b) Persons bom abroad whose father or paternal grandfather were born in
Qatar, except as provided for in Regulation 2.
2. Exceptions
Persons born in Qatar, whose fathers at the time of the birth possessed the
nationality of another State are not considered Qatar nationals: —
i
(a) If they register at the Political Agency, as persons subject to the Qatar
Order-in-Council, 1949, between their 17th and 18th birthdays if then
resident in Qatar or if not then resident in Qatar, within one year of
the commencement of such residence
(or)
1 (b) if they register at the Political Agency, as persons subject to the Qatar
Order-in-Council, 1949, within one year of the date of the publication
of these regulations if they have already attained the age of eighteen
years and are resident in Qatar
(or)
(c) if they have been registered at the Political Agency, as persons subject to
the Qatar Order-in-Council, 1949, within two years of their birth.
3. Loss of Qatar Nationality
A person who possesses Qatar Nationality shall lose such nationality: —
(a) if he acquires by naturalisation the nationality of another State;
(b) if he also possesses the nationality of another State and an order cancelling
his Qatar Nationality is made by the Ruler of Qatar.
4. Nationality of Wives
(a) A woman acquires Qatar Nationality if she marries a Qatar National.
(b) A woman who is a Qatar National shall lose Qatar Nationality if she
marries a foreigner provided she acquires the nationality of her husband
but not otherwise.
(c) A woman who has acquired Qatar Nationality by marriage shall lose Qatar
Nationality on being divorced or on becoming a widow. Qatar
Nationality, however, may be restored to her, by the Ruler of Qatar,
on her application.
5. Nationality Granted by Ruler
The Ruler of Qatar if he so wishes may grant Qatar Nationality to any person
resident in Qatar who applies for it in accordance with Qatar Naturalisation
Regulations and he may subsequently cancel the grant if such person ceases to
reside permanently in Qatar, or if for any reason the cancellation is expedient.
6. Naturalisation
(a) Application for naturalisation must be made on the prescribed form to
the Qatar Government.
(b) Every applicant before he can qualify for naturalisation must—
(i) have resided in Qatar for five years or more;
(ii) be a person of good character;
(iii) be of sound mind and good health;
