                                       Trade.
             Purin" the year 1892, owing to increase in the population, there was an
          increase  of about 50 per cent, in the domestic trade in food-stuffs, as also in the
          price and rent of shops and houses ; but owing to poverty induced by failure of
           oops there was do increase in general trade.

                                       Exports.
              Corn, skins, and wool.—Owing to failure of crops there was little corn
          exported while there was an increase in skins and wool owing to wa*io of fodder.
              Carpets.—There was an increase in carpets from Sultanabad, the only re­
          gular export from Irak by this route.
             JTorfes.—The horses exported were of better quality.
              Ghee.—Ghee which formerly went to Bassorah was exported to India.
              jBugloss of reeds.—There was an increase in shipments of natural products
          owing to iucrease demand in India.
              There were a large number of dates shipped to India by foreign coasting
           vessels: only statistics of cargo under British flag are available.
              The specie returns are complete, last year only given by one Company’s
          vessels.
                                       Imports.
              Co! I on goods.—There was a slight increase in piece-goods especially of those
           of Indiau-make.
              Iron.—There was a great decrease in iron owing to over-stock of previous
           year.
              Prom Bussorali about a hundred hales of cheap Manchester chintzes and
           about seven hundred cases of Batoum oil were imported by bellam (canoe).
                                        Shipping.
              Sea.—Only returns of British vessels available ; many coasting craft called
           during date season.

                                 Biter Kartjn Trade.
              Steamer.—The majority of the cargo was carried by the steamers owned by
           the Governor of MohammeraU running in connection with the Naseri Com­
           pany.
              Their rates being 61 krans (£1-12) per ton to Skusbter, although the Bri­
           tish Company only charged 40 krans (£1).
              Through shipment from foreign ports to Shushter was but little used by

                                   Caravan Trade.
              A caravan arrives from Dizful about once in 6ix weeks, bringing reeds, bug-
           oss> sesame-seeds, gbee, and linen piece-goods manufactured at Dizful.
              At the end of December one hundred and sixty cases of opium from
             madan and Burujir for Hongkong arrived, and more is expected, this route
             lnS cheaper than that via Bushire.
