Umm an-Nar and the Barbar I sequence. Only the grave goods (i.e., fine, painted
pottery) seems to occur contemporaneously. The provisional dating for Umm
an-Nar is early to late third millennium B.C. (Frifelt 1975:392), while Tosi (1976)
dates it to 2200-1800 B.C.
Cooking Wares
One plainer, but nonetheless valuable, component of the Barbar sequence is the
cooking ware (figs. 48 and 49). Two basic vessels are common, hole-mouth jars
with rim diameters of 10-24 cm and deep bowls of approximately the same
dimensions. The cooking wares are most often made of Barbar ware, and a
reduce-fired, sand-tempered, dark red ware with a dark gray to black exterior.
The common, plain-rimmed hole-mouths of Barbar I and the Barbar levels in
general are illustrated by Figures 48a-c. The remaining vessels are minor members
of these two assemblages. Plain hole mouth jars 48a-c represent 28.2 percent and
19.7 percent of the collections from levels 23 and 24. In level 20 they compose only
3.7 percent of the sample and are absent above this level.
