AVitli reference to your letter of the Gth October expressing the concur-
re nee of the Secretary of Suite for India in the reply which it wus proposod to
send to Her Majesty's Charge d'AIVaires nt Tchernu respecting the desire of the
Shah to cstnb'ish his authority over the island of Bahrain, I am directed by
the Karl of Iddesleigh to request that you will call the attention of Viscount
Cross to Air. Nicolson’s despatch No. Ill of the 1st ultimo of which a copy
lias been sent to the India Ollicc.
In this despatch Mr. Nicolsou states that, ns the Persian Government has
not mentioned the. matter since, ho has not thought it necessary to communi
1 cate to them the views of Iler Majesty’s Government on the subject, and that
unless it. should be again referred to lie proposes to let the. matter drop.
I am to inform you that Lord Iddesleigh proposes, with the. concurrence
of the Secretary of State for India, to approve the course adopted by Mr.
Nicolson.

mended by Her Majesty’s Charge d’AIVaires at Teheran, vis., to withhold tho
communication to tlie Persian G •vernment of tho views of llcr Majesty’s
Government in respect to the Shah’s pretensions to authority over Bahrain
as conveyed in the Foreign Odicc telegram of the 8th October 1880,
