The participant needs to feel heard in this session and historically. The participant needs to feel helpful and be part of the session. The participant needs guidance to stay focused as they are easily distracted.
There's a need to be acknowledged or for acknowledgment.
The participant's point of view may benefit the group.
      Approaches to Dealing with Distracting Behaviors
Check In
Your Response – Check in with yourself. Be self aware enough to know if it is just your reaction.
The Participant’s Why – Consider what lies beneath or behind the behavior, why might it be happening, or even ask directly.
Group Reaction – If the whole group is responding to the distracting behavior, you must address.
Surface
Speak to what is happening directly.
Redirect and/or Incorporate
Use the info or distraction to move things forward. Avoid blame. Be sure the challenger is heard and the group is taken care of.
