NHCin-ACTION Inspiring Freedom & Independence in the Lives of People with Disabilities
Julie Boldt’s abstract art titled “Breath of Summer” was a fun project to create in Day Services. Using coffee filters, paints, sequins and beads, her inspiration for the project comes from thinking about summer in the garden. “I added the butterflies because they remind me of how they flutter around the flowers,” she says.
Inspiration
The word “inspire” is key to our entire mission. It embod- ies our culture’s design and tells the story of our values. The dictionary would define it in a couple ways: to fill with an
animating, quickening, or exalting influence, or; to influence or impel.
When one believes that every human is a unique and powerful being with great potential and value, the things that separate us aren’t intelligence, class, wealth or race, but the degree each person’s own will is engaged. Our power to choose is the only thing we truly own. We can’t always control our health, our circumstances, the way we are born, or the choices others make that impact us, but we can choose how we handle those things.
Will is a powerful thing. It can be influenced many ways. Coercion, fear, and power produce some of the most immediate results, but there is a better way. A way that is intrinsic to us all. That way in- cludes messages of support, encouragement, per- suasion, teaching, and coaching. Those messages however are only received through people with individual credibility with each of us. That credi- bility is built over time with practiced tolerance, demonstrated acceptance, simplified understand- ing and enduring patience. Some of us get those things through a combination of family, friends and mentors. Unfortunately, many fail to receive those messages at all, making them subject to the more “immediate” results. NHC’s culture is designed to support, enrich and empower lives of all people because we all have disabilities. We are committed to resist the immediate influencers of the will and choose to inspire each person’s will to whatever po- tential they already possess. ♥
