Harriett and Thornton
“Ibby” Ibbetson
Harriett and her husband Ibby were long time
family members of the Los Cerritos YMCA,
formerly called the Bellflower YMCA. Harriett and
Ibby raised five children through the YMCA. Their
children were very involved and enjoyed Camp
Oakes and many other programs over the years.
Ibby and Harriett were both active in the Y. Ibby
was a member of the Y’s Mens Club and Harriett
was a member of the Y’ Menettes Club. Their
daughter Julie, a philanthropist herself, was also
involved in the Y. She became the first female
Board Chair of the YMCA of Greater Long Beach
and made a legacy gift to the Lakewood Family
YMCA. Ibby and Harriett were long time donors of
the Los Cerritos Y and joined the Heritage Club through their estate plans many
years ago.
Harriett and Ibby were married over 50 years. Ibby passed away in 2004 and Harriett
passed away on April 6, 2022.
Dr. Michael King, O.D. “Mike”
Mike King loved his Los Cerritos YMCA. He became involved in the 1950s and went
on to join the Board of Managers and become one of the longest serving board
members in the branch’s history. He served
as Chair of the Los Cerritos Board of
Managers in recent years, partnering with
current Executive Director Jeremy Echnoz.
Mike was a popular optometrist in town.
He and his wife Janet were faithful
supporters of the Y, believing in community
and helping the next generation. Mike and
Janet met at Downey High School, enjoyed
61 years of marriage together and raised
two sons through the Y. Janet recalls some
of her sons’ favorite Y memories were
attending Camp Oakes, and the opening of
the Bellflower Y.
Mike retired from his optometry practice five years ago and he and Janet moved to
Palm Desert. Mike and Janet became Heritage Club members several years ago and
enjoyed the annual dinners and receptions.
Mike passed away on June 19, 2022 and is survived by his wife Janet and their
two sons.
