Dottie Frazier May
Dottie Frazier May was born and raised in Long Beach. She was admired and
beloved by all who knew her. She lived her life to the fullest and packed in
more experiences and adventures than can be counted. Dottie loved the water
and was a world-renowned underwater pioneer recognized for her scuba and
free-diving pursuits. She enjoyed fishing, boating and taking trips to Mexico to
pursue her adventures. Dottie was a natural athlete and known locally for her
love of racquetball. Later in life, Dottie documented her adventures in a book,
Trailblazer, by Dottie Frazier.
Dottie was a long-time enthusiast of the YMCA of Greater Long Beach. She grew
up in the YMCA of Greater Long Beach, along with her dad who was also active
in the Y. She claimed to be the first female member of the Long Beach Y. As an
adult, she continued her Y involvement as an active member of the Downtown
Y, visiting daily as part of her lifelong love of enjoying an active and healthy
lifestyle. Dottie had a special affection for Camp Oakes and enjoyed visiting each
summer. A special treat for Dottie was visiting one of the cabins at Camp Oakes
that had been named to honor her father, Francis Reider.
Well into her 90s, she continued her annual visits to Camp Oakes and is fondly
remembered for braving the zipline at age 96. In tribute to her beloved father
who had introduced her to the Y, Dottie made a substantial contribution to
renovate the cabin that was named in his honor.
Dottie passed away on February 8, 2022. She is survived by her husband Cyril
May, her three sons Donald, David, and Danny, and grandchildren Dannelle,
Dave Jr., Debra, Dennis, Drew, Jenna, and Niki.
