JOINING THE WORKFORCE
When I started my first job at the Department of Justice as a
lawyer, it was a heady experience. I was recruited there by the U.S.
attorney, Bill George, who was U.S. attorney for the state of
Kansas. He recommended that I join the honors program at the
Department of Justice. Robert Kennedy, President John
Kennedy's brother, was the attorney general. Although I was not a
complete honor student at KU, I had decent grades.
When I got the recommendation from Bill to Bobby
Kennedy, he accepted me into the honors program and said that I
would have been an honor student if I hadn't worked my way
through law school, which I did. I worked full time, 40 hours a
week in law school and supported my wife and one child; a third
child was born in my last year of law school.
When I applied through George for the Justice Department,
Robert Kennedy said I would have been an honor student, and he
