ACTIVITY 8      Steps to Composing

           Read the paragraph. Then follow the directions in the 10 steps to edit the information
           and composition of this paragraph. Write your revised paragraph on a separate sheet of
           paper. Be careful with capitalization and punctuation. Check your answers with the class.





              CAUSE-EFFECT PARAGRAPH


                                           Murray College
                1  Last year, Murray College helped 5,000 students graduate.   The majority of them

            got jobs almost immediately.   A good number of these students entered graduate

            programs.   Therefore, it is not surprising that Murray College is frequently ranked

            as one of the best colleges.   Why does Murray College have this high ranking?

            6  First of all, students and their parents are very satisfied with Murray College’s high
            job placement rate.   The second reason involves money.   Despite the rising cost

            of everything last year, tuition at Murray remained relatively low.   Finally, students

            appreciate the small classes with professors who take a strong interest in student

            success.   Last year, graduates from Murray College said that the college was an

            excellent investment in their future.



             1. In sentence 1, change last year to since opening its doors in 1990. Change the verb
              if needed.

             2.  In sentence 1, change 5,000 to more than 10,000.

             3.  In sentence 2, change the informal phrase got jobs to entered the workforce.
             4.  Connect sentences 2 and 3. Begin the new sentence with while.

             5.  In sentence 4, add the prepositional phrase in the country in the best location.

             6.  In sentence 5, change have this high ranking to rank so high.

             7.  The adjective high is repeated in sentences 5 and 6. In sentence 6, change high to
              excellent.
             8.  In sentence 8, change last year to today. Then change the verb to match the new
              adverb of time.

             9.  In sentence 9 add the adjective helpful to describe professors.

             10.  In sentence 10, change last year to since it opened over a decade ago. Change the
              verb if needed.
