I stumbled on a video that says: “Adam Ruins
Everything: Why Buy One, Give One Companies
Don’t Help Anyone.” The video was critical of
TOMS and claimed that TOMS uses guilt to
convince people to buy their shoes, yet local
shoemakers lose business in the communities where
TOMS floods the market with free shoes. The video
further explained that TOMS's shoes only cost them
$4 to make, yet TOMS is selling them for $60. Even
though it was not Mycoskie’s intention to create
additional economic problems in the impoverished
communities he intended to help, it happened.
Therefore, we must find a new way to serve those in
need.
TOMS received the backlash from consumers
after that video. So they built shoe factories in some
of the communities where they supplied free shoes
to help the economy. Now sources state that TOMS
gives away $1 for every $3 they make in the form of
footwear, grants, partnerships, and grants,
