The “Alter Realist” composition integrates two salient aspects; namely the classical statuary
and the Rose Garden’s central feature of the Water Fountain.
The male and female pedestal busts allude to shared physical attraction .
In the centre the element of water represents life -giving refreshment .

Violet the 8th Duchess commissioned the landscape architect Harold Peto to create the Rose
Garden. Peto was at the time a renowned garden designer working in the fashionable Italian School
aesthetic.
