Spring brings the sense and experience of vibrant fresh colours, intense light and dramatic contrasts.
The scene is painted from a vantage point on the Duke’s Walk. This walk was designed by
Elizabeth when the new gardens were being created in the early 1800’s and then known as the
Ladies Garden. Its route sets out from the castle grounds and skirts the side of Blackberry Hill,
passing the Spring and Hermit Gardens being set in an amphitheatre which is a geological feature
shaped by past glaciers.
In the spring the terraced slopes are carpeted with Primroses and Daffodils, mixed with petals shed
from the surrounding canopy of blossom bearing trees. A truly transient period of the year.
