136901 ‘The Assembly of Time’
The Sun King – Louis XIV,
Canvas 40 1/8 x 60 1/4 inches
Blenheim Palace
The series of mirror compositions contrasts the material presence of the exterior space outside the mirror’s
reflective surface, to that of the interior place of the mirror and the reflected world in light.
The compression of the State Room within the reflection concentrates the elements of the room, thereby
changing their spatial visual connectivity.
This creates a sense of suspension of time, where remnants and affirmations of past events coexist and
continually act out.
nd
Set within the 2 State Room, the portrait of Louis XIV, which is a copy of the original held in the Louvre,
Paris, is positioned between the Blenheim Tapestries and can be seen as the consequence of his expansionist
manoeuvres within Europe.
