Blenheim Palace
The series of mirror compositions contrasts the material presence
of the exterior space outside the mirror’s reflective surface, to that
of the interior place of the mirror and the reflected world in light.
The compression of the State Room within the reflection concen-
trates the elements of the room, thereby changing their spatial
visual connectivity.
This creates a sense of suspension of time, whereby remnants and
affirmations of past events coexist and continually act out. The
interior scene integrates the State Room and captures the moment
of decisive orders being given by the First Duke, portrayed within
the tapestry. The array of Battle-flags, the consequence of action,
are also caught therein.
The foreground clock, with its warrior figurehead, reinforces the
state of conflict being held in time.
The portrait above the doorway is of the First Duke.
