Past Perfect is used to make it clear that one event happened before
another in the past. It is used when we talk about an action that had
finished before a specific time or another action in the past.
When we arrived at the station, the train had already left.
He had finished his work by the time we came.
It had already stopped raining by the time we went out.
They had been to Japan twice by the time they moved to Tokyo.
Had he already met Susan by that time?
