Security Bars May Give Another Impression

by Tanja Tanner, Goodyear Fire Department, Community Education Coordinator

FACT: About 50 people are injured or die each year in home fires in which security bars got
                                                  in the way of escape.

Some of the homes in Litchfield Park date back to the 1960s and 1970s. A construction trend
during those times was to install security bars, which may have been for safety or to simply add
a different look to the homes.

We want to bring awareness about security bars on your home. Some security bars, also called burglar
bars, can trap you in a fire. They can slow down the firefighters from getting in to rescue you. Every
second counts. If you have security bars on the windows, do they have a quick-release device? Please
make sure everyone in your home can open them. This can be done while you are practicing your home
escape plan. Remember, everyone needs a home escape plan, not just homes with children.

Some tips for home escape:

  • Have working smoke alarms in each bedroom. You also need one outside each sleeping area.
  • Test all smoke alarms once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarms are working.
  • Choose an outside meeting place.
  • Talk about the escape plan with everyone in your home. Practice this plan at least twice a year.
  • Make sure all exits can be opened easily from the inside; everyone needs to be able to ‘self-escape.’
  • Make sure your home address is clearly marked on the front of your home. Never hesitate. Call 9-1-1 for an emergency.
