Recycling Signs Abound

By Laila Amerman, Waste Management Recycling Education Representative

Have you ever recycled something that you weren’t sure was truly recyclable but hoped for the best? You’re not alone. While only 20% of people
will admit when they don’t know if something is recyclable, up to 65% of people will put the wrong item into the recycling bin at some point.
Waste Management drivers placed recycling stickers on every recycling cart in Litchfield Park to help reduce this confusion. Before you
dump your recyclables in your cart, take a quick look at the sticker to make sure you’re recycling correctly. Play it safe. If it’s not listed
on the sticker, keep it out of your recycling cart. When trash is mixed with recyclables, it drives up the cost to recycle, and it prevents
good materials from getting reused.

Simple ways to recycle with confidence:

1. Place your trash and recycling cans side-by-side. Many people use the first bin they see, which means trash can be mixed with recycling.
Putting your bins next to each other, whether in the bathroom, kitchen or home office, makes it easy to recycle right every time.

2. Clearly label trash and recycling bins to avoid a mix up. It can be as simple as adding the recycling symbol, or you can download
and print these colorful signs recycleoftenrecycleright.com/resources/for-home/.

Expert Tip: Place a poster of what is recyclable at eye level above the recycling bin(s) in your home where it will have the most impact.

If there is no available wall space, place the label on the side or lid of the bin.

may be set out after 6pm of the day preceding regular collection and be removed from the curb by midnight of the day of collection. All
