Living History Tours
Visit the beautiful coastal heritage town of Dalkey, only thirty minutes from Dublin city centre.
Start your day with a visit to Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre where 21st century technology meets 15th century Living History.
The Living History tour involves actors from Deilg Inis Theatre Company, in full period costume, bringing the history of the
15th century Fortified Town House /Castle and the wider area to colourful life. Travel back in time to the 1500s with our Living
History actors and see the extraordinary work of the Archer as he shows you his skills with the Longbow.
Smack your lips to Tudor recipes at the Cook’s table. Learn how to make hedgehog pie! If your beard
or hair is in need of a trim, the Barber Surgeon has special offers most days! Join in the fun and
hear about ancient remedies and marvel at the implements for curing all ailments!
From the battlements you can take in the panoramic views of sea and mountains. Enjoy the peace
and tranquillity of the early Christian Church and Graveyard, dedicated to Saint Begnet.
Browse the interactive time line in our modern Heritage Centre from early Christian through
Viking, Medieval, Victorian and modern times in Dalkey (available in 12 languages).
Admission is only €7.50 per person for Active Retired Groups for a very entertaining and unique
experience. One leader is free with every 10 admissions. The tour lasts approximately one hour.
Accessibility: Partial wheel chair access. We can accommodate full groups who are unable to go up
the stairs to the Living Quarters with advance notice at certain times of the year.
Coach Parking: Available nearby.

Mid-morning coffee options are numerous at The Tramyard, original home to Dalkey’s
Trams where the cobbles and some of the track are still evident. Idlewilde Café and
Country Bake are also local favourites serving freshly baked cakes and bread. Stop for
lunch in any one of Dalkey’s restaurants and bistros. Pub lunches are also available in any
of the pubs. Why not look into Finnegan’s where Michelle Obama and family lunched with
Bono and Maeve Binchy had her own lunch table every day!

‘On Yer Bike with Dalkey’s Writers’ - For bespoke groups
This evening show at 7:30pm is a compilation of the work of famous local writers – James Joyce, Samuel Beckett,
Hugh Leonard, Flann O’Brien, Maeve Binchy, John Millington Synge, Van Morrison, Seamus Heaney,
Joseph O’Connor and more. The show lasts about 55 minutes. The performance has a Flann O’Brien like character
who will conjure up characters to play various well known scenes from the work of the writers listed. The show
is an entertaining and enlightening whistle-stop ‘taster’ through the work of our internationally acclaimed
writers, who were all associated with Dublin and Dalkey. ‘On Yer Bike’ can be performed for your
bespoke groups against the beautiful backdrop of St Begnet’s Church at Dalkey Castle &
Heritage Centre. All attendees will have the opportunity to browse the fabulous Writers’
Gallery before and after the show. The cost for a group is €750 and the maximum
