NURSING HOMES WEEK 2014
In June 2014, NHI Members in communities across Ireland
celebrated nursing home life. Nursing home residents,
their relatives and friends, staff and wider communities
participated in events and activities that celebrated the
positivity of nursing home life. The 2014 celebrations
ran 16th – 22nd June and built upon the success of the
2013 inaugural celebrations. ‘Traditional’ celebrations were
combined with more novel, quirky festivities that included:
• A Mardi Gras themed World Cup party:
• A Phantom of the Opera themed masked ball
• An X-Factor competition
• A Casino day
• A 1940’s themed celebration
• Mad hatters tea parties
• A visit to the Mansion House to meet the Lord Mayor
of Dublin
• A historical workshop looking at 800 years of fashion
• A summer fashion show featuring resident’s modelling
their own creations
• Transformation of a chapel into a cinema
• Intercultural & intergenerational events
• A heritage and vintage day
• Residents and school students teaming up for a sports
day
• A resident’s art exhibition
Those ‘traditional’ celebrations encompassed barbecues, tea
and garden parties, song and dance, day trips, quizzes and
competitions, reminiscence activities, baking, and pet farm
visits.
