Page 14 - A Life - my Live - my path
P. 14
On the other hand, in recent years, both my father and
mother became very heavily dependent on us. We've had to
support them and help them to the point where we've had to
sleep at their house every day of the week - in turn - several
days a week.
So, I spent a lot of time with my parents during the last 3
years of their lives.
This period was remarkable in many ways. It enabled me to
verify the scientific assertion that memory is much more
accurate when we recall old memories than when we recall
more recent ones.
It was hugely gratifying to see the pleasure, even
happiness, that my parents felt when we reminisced about
their past.
Talking to my father about San Giovanni Lipioni was like
bringing him a breath of fresh air. It was a real moment of
happiness every time.
Asking my mother to talk for the umpteenth time about
the first time she met my father, with a little more emphasis
on details, took her back to her teenage years and the fact
that, at that time, she had to grow up fast.
On several occasions, I was able to read her some of the
passages I had already written about my childhood
memories of San Giovanni Lipioni. She was delighted, with
her head resting on the top of her armchair and a slight smile
of satisfaction.
I really enjoyed those special moments.
