                Teacher Instructions

Explicit Instruction, Guided Instruction, Independent Practice, and Exit Ticket

SEL Standard 3A.2a- Demonstrate the ability to respect the rights of self and others.

                Explicit Instruction (I Do)

Teacher: Read the following story aloud to the students.
During literacy instruction, Eric is trying to get his classmate Erica’s attention by continuously

mumbling, “shut up,” to her. Eric’s behavior disrupted his teacher’s lesson. As a result, Ms.
Jones redirected Eric when she told him to respect his classmate and to not disrupt the

lesson. Eric replied, “I can’t deal with girls because they irritate me.”

                Teacher’s explanation:
Eric is not focused on learning the lesson. Therefore, he does not respect his right to a good

education. Eric’s disruptive behavior also proves that he does not respect his classmates’
right to a good education either. He also has a negative attitude about girls, which is

                disrespectful.

                Guided Instruction (We Do)
Teacher: Read the following story aloud to the students or choose several students to read

                the story aloud.
