Teacher: Instruct the students to read the following story and answer the questions on the
handout while working in cooperative groups.

At the end of a writing lesson Ms. Jones gave her students time to ask questions because she

wanted to ensure they had learned the skill. Donald attempted to ask a question, but Princess
quickly interrupted Donald by talking over him and asking her own question. Ms. Jones did not
answer her question and told Princess that she should have been patient and polite.

• Why did Ms. Jones tell Princess that she should have been patient and polite?

• What could Donald have said to speak up for himself in this instance?
Discuss their answers and help them determine which ones are appropriate and eˆective tools for
dealing with bullies.
