National level e-symposium on “Agroforestry system for augmenting livestock
productivity and empowering resource poor rural farmers”
In almost all the feeding trials conducted in India , Goats used green leaves most efficiently followed
by sheep, Camel and Cattle. Tree leaves either green or dried when fed along with concentrates become
valuable feed resource for ruminants . Supplementing crop residues with tree fodder significantly increase
voluntary intake and digestability of rice straw. Partial replacement of Cereal fodder with tree leaves increase
Livestock production including milk yield
The Agroforestry systems like Silvipasture, Hortipasture, Hortisilvipasture, Agrisilviculture, Three
strata Forage Production system Bund plantations etc., have proved to improve Livestock production viz.Feed
Intake, Digestibility,Growth and Milk production . However more shrubs not explored so far be experimented
for inclusion in different Agro forestry systems and their Livestock production potential be assessed.
Recommendations
Research
1. More new legume shrubs like Sesbania, Sp ,Erythrina Sp.etc., be explored for integration in
Agroforestry systems.
2. Milk production potential and meat production potential per hectare of different Agroforestry
systems be experimented and documented.
3. Compatibility of class of livestock for integration in different systems be experimented.
4. Effect of grazing livestock in different Agroforestry systems on milk composition, Meat quality and
Endo- parasitic load in Livestock may be Experimented .
5. To conduct more on - farm trials to validate the Experimental results.
Extension
1. Awareness to Elected Village Presidents on the need for improving the degraded village Grazing
lands for increasing livestock production.
2. Awareness to Milk Society Presidents on the need for establishing agroforestry systems in
private land of Milk pourers.
