Böden, ideal für Riesling
„Wir können auf dieser Qualitätsstufe produzieren, weil wir in Bensheim über ausgezeichnete Weinlagen verfügen, Böden, die für den Riesling wie geschaffen sind. Der Kirchberg ist eine unserer Spitzenlagen und die Kalkgasse - ein ehemaliger Marmorsteinbruch - ist unser Prunkstück”, freut sich Seiberth. Weitere Weine kommen aus dem Bensheimer Südhang “Streichling”, ebenfalls eine sehr gute Lage.
Natürlich haben Weiß- und Grauburgunder ebenfalls ihren berechtigten Platz im Weingut der Stadt Bensheim. Seit einigen Jahren gesellt sich zu dem Angebot auch der Chardonnay. Zu den Raritäten auf der Weinkarte und Spitzenprodukten zählen Auslesen, Beerenauslesen und Eisweine, die freilich nicht jeder Jahrgang hergibt.
Aromenreicher Rotberger
Es scheint eine Eigenart der Bergsträsser Winzer zu sein, dass sie neben den im Anbau traditionellen Sorten meist auch einen „Einzelgänger” mit einem gewissen Enthusiasmus p egen. Bei Axel Seiberth ist das der Rotberger, eine seltene Rotweinworte, aus einer Kreuzung von Trollinger und Riesling an der Forschungsanstalt Geisenheim gezüchtet und seit 1971 in die Sortenliste aufgenommen. Dem Rotberger wird besondere Eignung für den Roséausbau und durch sein nachhaltiges Aroma auch zur Versektung zugesprochen. Und genau dazu setzt sie Seiberth ein und produziert außerdem aus der Traube einen Secco und einen vorzüglichen Blanc de Noir.
Auf weiteren 15 Prozent der Reb äche im Weingut der Stadt Bensheim wachsen Rotweine - ausschließlich Spätburgunder.

Soils ideal for Rieslings
“We can produce wines at this quality level because we have excellent vineyards in Bensheim with soils that are made for the Riesling. The Kirchberg is one of our prime locations and the Kalkgasse - a former marble quarry - is our showpiece,” says Seiberth with enthusiasm. Other wines come from the Bensheim south slope “Streichling”, also a very good location.
Of course, Pinot Gris and Pinot noir also have their rightful place in the Bensheim winery. For some years, Chardonnay has also been included in the range. Among the rarities on the wine list and top-quality products are harvest selections, berry selections, and ice wines, which, of course, not every vintage produces.
Flavour-rich Rotberger
It seems to be a peculiarity of the Bergsträsser winemakers that in addition to the cultivars of traditional varieties, they usually cultivate a “loner” with a certain enthusiasm. For Axel Seiberth this is the Rotberger, a rare red wine variety that is bred from a cross between Trollinger and Riesling at the Research Institute Geisenheim and was added to the list of varieties in 1971. The Rotberger is awarded special suitability to be developed as a Rosé as well as a sparkling wine due to its lasting avour. And that’s exactly what Seiberth uses it for as well as producing a secco and an excellent blanc de noir.
Red wines grow on another 15 percent of the vineyard in the Bensheim winery - exclusively for Pinot Noir.
Light Rieslings
As an introduction to tasting, Seiberth presents his Riesling litre, a QbA (a quality classi cation), with a full-bodied peach avour and low acidity of 6.5 per thousand. Still full-bodied and sparkling, which was awarded the gold medal at the state wine awards.
We are excited about the Rosé from the Kalkgasse, which was pressed from this Rotberger. A semi-dry wine accompanied by a light pink colour and a hint of strawberry and raspberry, awarded silver at the state wine awards. We nd the white Burgundy to be strong and fruity. The 12.5 percent alcohol indicates the long maturity of the wine. The grey Burgundy was also a hit at the state wine awards with gold and presented sustainable yellow fruits in its aroma.
