G . Articles ‘A/An’ and ‘The’
a. ‘A or ‘an’
‘A’ and ‘an’ are called indefinite articles. Indefinite means no specific. Use ‘a’ or ‘an’ when
you are talking about things in general, not a specific thing. You cannot use ‘a’ or ‘an’ with
plural nouns because they mean one or a single.
Example:
1) I need a phone.
2) Mark wants a bicycle.
3) This is an excellent book.
b. The
‘The’ is called a definite article. Definite means specific. Use ‘the’ when you are talking
about something which is already known to the listener or which has been previously mentioned,
introduced, or discussed. You can use 'the' with both singular nouns and plural nouns.
Example:
1) I have a cat. The cat is black.
2) There is a book in my backpack. The book is very heavy.
3) Do you own a bicycle? Is the bicycle blue?
