Jimmy once had the opportunity to stay in Austin with Harley
while his parents went out of town on a trip. Upon arrival, Jimmy
quizzed Harley.
“All right, Harley, tell me what to do.”
“You know I can stay by myself!” Harley replied.
“I know—but where do I need to take you to meet the bus? I'll
drive you this morning,” Jimmy suggested.
“I can walk. The school bus stop is just down two blocks on a big
curve.”
“I'd like to take you, so I know where to find the bus stop.”
When Harley got out of the car, Uncle Jimmy asked him, “What
time do I pick you up?” Harley didn't respond as he walked towards
the school bus. So, Uncle Jimmy purposely walked to the bus stop an
hour before he thought the school bus would actually arrive that
afternoon so he wouldn't miss Harley.
When Harley stepped down off the bus, Uncle Jimmy remained
incognito several feet behind. He then slowly, quietly followed Harley
walking home with his white cane and carrying his backpack. It was
quite evident that Harley obviously knew his way home.
At Harley's driveway there was a small concrete bridge walkway to
cross over. Uncle Jimmy became concerned that Harley might
stumble while attempting this obstacle. Unexpectedly, Harley turned
and expertly walked around to a mailbox to pick up the family mail.
Then, Harley successfully navigated over the bridge and went on up
the yard and into the house.
Uncle Jimmy cunningly waited outdoors for a while before he
casually entered the house. At that precise moment, Harley smiled
broadly and teased, “Well, I did that rather well, didn't I? Now, I'm
going to cook dinner for us.”
Harley proceeded to prepare his signature dinner: Hidden Valley
Ranch Chicken Casserole with a side of complementary vegetables.
Characteristic of a true chef, Harley went to the refrigerator, got out
all the necessary ingredients, and skillfully prepared his delicious
