Mark Penton, supported by his Volunteer Fire Department, is the
top fundraiser for the Dell St. Baldrick's event. Mark was dedicated to
this organization primarily because his daughter, Tara Penton, was
diagnosed in 2009 with Rhabdomyosarcoma which is an aggressive
and highly malignant form of cancer that develops from skeletal
muscle cells that have failed to fully differentiate. It is generally
considered to be a disease of childhood.
Mark and Kevin, Harley's dad, knew each other since they both
worked through the ranks of Austin Water Utility for years eventually
both reaching the rank of superintendent. As “shavees,” they
challenged each other annually to raise as many funds as possible to
help fund a cure for childhood cancer. Tara's supporters at St.
Baldrick's organized a fundraising team called “Tara's Team” in which
both Kevin and Harley participated as “shavees.”
